Zowie is a second year M.A. candidate working under the supervision of Dr. Jenna Healey. Her research focuses on how syphilis was discussed by doctors in early-to-mid nineteenth-century Quebec, and how that influenced the field's emerging masculine identity. By contrasting the ways doctors defined themselves in relation to venereal disease in medical journals with accounts of scandals and intraprofessional disputes, she explores how divergent or conflicting understandings of gender, sexuality, and disease allowed doctors to negotiate their own professional authority and self-conception.
