HRLG: What's so special about "special programs"?

    When:
    Monday, May 4, 2026
    11:30 AM – 1:30 PM
    Where:
    Mackintosh-Corry Hall
    Find on Campus Map
    Description:

Please join the Human Rights Legislation Group and Njeri Damali Sojourner-Campbell for a conversation about special programs.

As EDI initiatives are being scaled back, it is increasingly important to understand what the law says about programs designed to expand access to hiring, adֱs, and services. These initiatives aim to support students and employees who have historically—and continue to—face systemic disadvantage on our campus.

Canadian law recognizes the need to protect these “special programs” and affirm that organizations may establish programs to address inequality.

Join the Human Rights & Equity Office for a session led by human rights lawyer Njeri Damali Sojourner-Campbell to learn more about the legal foundations of special programs. The discussion will also explore contentious questions like “Is this reverse discrimination?” and “What about excellence?”

A light lunch will be served.
